Zero sum game in defining deviancy down1/24/2024 Strictly speaking, zero-sum games can be played with or without that transparency, but in most cases it has a significant impact on the outcome. Disallow God’s Law word as the norm that norms all norms and the consequence will always be a defining of deviancy down. The only place that anchor can be found is in God’s Law word. This article argues why anthropology matters, both for Bible reading in general and intercultural theology in particular, and how insights gained can help in understanding and communication of biblical texts. 2.1 Zero-Sum Games and the Problem of Transparency The question of transparency or disclosure, i.e., whether each player knows the other’s strategy, is important in zero-sum games. Defining deviancy downwards happens because the social order does not have an anchor that will not allow them to drift with the tide. And what if another cultural environment puts emphasis on issues yet different from the original listeners and modern western readers respectively? Understanding of the text and communication of its message is inseparably tied to cultural environments. What if the cultural setting of the original listeners is radically different from a Euroamerican cultural environment? The issues to which the ancient and modern listeners react emotionally and intellectually will necessarily differ from each other-at times significantly. It is argued that this might indeed be the case with Jesus' famous parable in Lk 15:11-32 in many (English) translations. As much as the practice of supplying modern Bible translations with headlines between scripture passages is helpful and convenient to the reader, it carries the danger of preconditioning the reader's understanding of the text.
